News Alert: Severe Thunderstorms with Lightning Expected in Several Areas of Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory warning for thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning in parts of Sri Lanka, particularly in the evening or at night. The areas likely to be affected include Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, and North-Western provinces, as well as Mannar, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa districts.

In addition to lighting, there may be fairly heavy showers of above 75mm in some places. Temporary localized strong winds may also occur during the thundershowers. The Department of Meteorology advises the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

As weather conditions can change rapidly, it is important for residents and travellers in the affected areas to stay updated with the latest weather updates and follow any instructions or warnings issued by the authorities. Taking appropriate safety measures, such as avoiding open areas, seeking shelter indoors, and staying away from tall objects or metal structures during thunderstorms, is highly recommended to ensure personal safety and prevent any potential damage.
