COVID-19 kills 2 in Mahara Division, Sri Lanka – Unvaccinated 81yo among victims

Two COVID-19-related deaths have been reported in the Kinigama and Akbar Town GN Divisions of the Mahara GS Division, as confirmed by Mahara MOH Dr Nihal Gamage. The deceased individuals were identified as an 81-year-old female and an 80-year-old male, both of whom were residents of Kinigama and Akbar Town, respectively. According to local Public Health Inspectors, it has been over a year since COVID-19 deaths have been reported from the Mahara GN Division.
The PHIs further revealed that the female victim had not received any COVID-19 vaccinations, while the male victim had only received one dose. Both individuals were also suffering from chronic diseases.
As per the Epidemiology Unit, the total number of COVID-19 deaths has now reached 16,844 in Sri Lanka since the pandemic began. In the last 10 days alone, there have been five COVID-19-related fatalities reported.
The emergence of these latest COVID-19 deaths underscores the ongoing threat of the pandemic and the importance of remaining vigilant in preventing its spread. The government continues to encourage citizens to get vaccinated and follow COVID-19 safety guidelines to minimize the risk of infection and transmission.
