In a significant move ahead of the upcoming presidential election, Sri Lanka’s main opposition party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), has announced that it will field a candidate. The decision was taken at the party’s working committee meeting held on May 8, where it was also decided to form a broad alliance led by the SJB to ensure the candidate’s victory.

To lead this alliance and spearhead the party’s efforts to win the election, the SJB has delegated power to its opposition leader, Sajith Premadasa. This move signals the party’s confidence in Premadasa’s ability to galvanize support and secure victory for the SJB’s presidential candidate.

In a further display of the party’s determination to maintain discipline and unity among its members, it was also decided at the meeting to grant Premadasa the authority to take disciplinary action against any member who opposes the decisions of the party’s working committee.

The SJB’s decision to field a candidate for the upcoming presidential election and form a broad alliance is sure to shake up the political landscape in Sri Lanka. As the country prepares for what is expected to be a fiercely contested election, all eyes will be on the SJB and its presidential candidate, as they seek to unseat the incumbent government and take charge of the country’s future.
