In breaking news, a group of 41 Sri Lankan immigrants were repatriated by Australian security forces and deported after attempting to enter Australia illegally. The deportees, mostly residents of Jaffna and Valachchenai, had used multi-day fishing vessels to cross the Australian maritime border. They were detained by Australian security forces and held at Christmas Island before being flown back to Sri Lanka on a special flight.

Upon their arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, they were handed over to Immigration & Emigration officials and top-level officials from the Australian High Commission in Colombo. The deportees were then taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department officials attached to the BIA, who will record their statements and produce them before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court.
