In a surprise move, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has named Linda Yaccarino as the new chief executive of Twitter, just over six months after his controversial takeover of the social media company. Yaccarino, the former head of advertising at NBCUniversal, will oversee business operations at the struggling site, while Musk will remain involved as executive chairman and chief technology officer. With fewer than 10% of Fortune 500 tech companies headed by women, Yaccarino’s appointment is a rare example of a woman at the top of a major tech firm.

Yaccarino’s background in advertising could help Twitter, which has seen its ad sales drop sharply since Musk’s takeover, but she faces the challenge of running a business that has struggled to be profitable and managing hate speech. The announcement was made on Twitter, confirming Musk’s earlier post in which he said he had found a new boss without revealing their identity.
