France plunged into a new political crisis on Tuesday, as opposition lawmakers threatened to topple Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s minority government in a vote of no confidence after three months in power. The dispute follows persistent tension over an austerity budget that has rattled financial markets since 73-year-old President Emmanuel Macron took office in September.

Barnier, under pressure to implement spending-cutting measures, said he would bring a no-confidence vote after using executive powers to force social security legislation without a vote on Monday.
